Block
Taking a punch on your arm or glove when there is no time to move.
Breathing
A sharp breath out on each punch and a steady rhythm in between. The cheapest fitness gain in boxing.
Catch
Taking a straight punch on the palm of your rear glove, held at your cheek.
Chin position
Keeping the chin tucked down and behind the lead shoulder, where your own body protects it.
Guard
Where the hands live when they are not punching, and the position every punch returns to.
Hip rotation
Turning the hips through a punch so the power comes from the ground rather than the arm.
Parry
Deflecting a straight punch with a small movement of the rear hand, rather than blocking or avoiding it.
Pivot
Turning on the ball of the lead foot to swing the back foot round, changing the angle without stepping.
Roll
Travelling under a hooking punch by bending the knees and turning the shoulders, coming up on the other side.
Slip
Moving your head just off the line of a straight punch, without taking your feet or your guard anywhere.
Stance
The staggered, side-on position everything else is built on. Feet about shoulder-width apart and one stride deep, knees soft, weight even.
Step-drag
Moving in any direction while staying in stance the whole time — the basic unit of boxing footwork.
