Rear hook

Take this slowly, stay balanced, and ask your coach when something feels unclear.

category

punches

plain english

A hook thrown with your back hand. It covers more distance than the lead hook and needs a bigger turn through the hips and back foot.

example

“Too wide” usually means the elbow has drifted behind the line of the shoulder.

why it matters

It is a heavy punch but a slow one, so coaches teach it after you can already return the lead hook cleanly to guard.

common mistake

Winding up, which both telegraphs the punch and leaves your own chin exposed.
