RingsideReady

Lead hand

Take this slowly, stay balanced, and ask your coach when something feels unclear.

category

stance

plain english

The hand nearer your opponent — the left in orthodox, the right in southpaw. It throws the jab and the lead hook.

example

Coaches say “lead” rather than “left” so the instruction works for both stances.

why it matters

Class instructions are given in lead and rear, not left and right, so knowing which is which is the difference between following along and guessing.

common mistake

Translating to “left” in your head and then getting it wrong when you switch stance.
