Jab

Take this slowly, stay balanced, and ask your coach when something feels unclear.

category

punches

plain english

The straight punch from your lead hand — the hand nearer your opponent. It travels straight out and straight back along the same line, with your palm turning down as it lands.

example

“Double the jab” means throw two of them in a row before anything else.

why it matters

It is the punch you will throw more than all the others combined. It measures distance, sets up everything behind it, and keeps you from having to guess how far away you are.

common mistake

Dropping the hand on the way back instead of returning it straight to your cheek.
