First Class Checklist

Ten practical steps, from booking a beginners' class to booking the next one. Take them in any order that helps you walk in calm.

Before you go

Find a beginners' class you will actually get toIf the timetable does not say beginners or fundamentals, ask outright. Most gyms are glad to point you at the right session.Book a named session and say it is your first timeSay it again when you arrive. Front desk and coach are often different people.Ask what to bring, wear, and whether they lend glovesFlat shoes you can pivot in. Something you can move in. You usually do not need to buy anything yet.Learn the numbers — 1 jab, 2 cross, 3 lead hookThose three numbers alone get you a long way. Look them up in the glossary if the words are new.Practice stance and hands returning to your faceFeet shoulder-width and one stride apart, knees soft, side-on. Throw a slow punch, then freeze with both hands at your cheeks.

The day

Pack wraps, water, towel, and kit the night beforeAdd a plastic bag for the wet stuff. Practice wrapping once at home if you already own wraps — snug, never numb.Arrive ten minutes early and say it is your first time againPut the arrival time in your calendar, not the class time. Nobody has ever been annoyed by hearing it is your first class.

In class

Go at about half power; ask the moment you do not know a wordIf your wrist bends or your knuckles hurt, stop and ask a coach to check your wraps. The people who ask are the people who stay.Never spar on a first session; stop if dizzy or you take a knock to the headIf a gym suggests sparring in your first class, that tells you something about the gym. If you take a knock to the head or feel dizzy, stop and get prompt medical care.

After

Book the next class before the feeling wears offBook it within twenty-four hours. That is the whole trick. Log the session while it is still fresh — type, rounds, and how it felt.
